Syracuse, N.Y. -- Anyone who works at the Rescue Mission will make at least $15 an hour, the nonprofit organization announced today.
That minimum wage applies to both new hires and current employees. New York’s minimum wage is currently $12.50 an hour, but the lowest pay a person can receive from unemployment benefits works out to about $15 an hour in New York. That’s because of additional federal unemployment benefits meant to ease the hardship created by the pandemic.
“We are proud to also be able to ensure that our essential staff are also provided for via a living wage and strong benefits,” said Rescue Mission CEO Dan Sieburg.
The Rescue Mission currently has 50 open positions it needs to fill. The jobs range from warehouse and working in Thrifty Shopper stores to case management and IT, Seiburg said in a release.
“Raising our minimum wage allows the Rescue Mission to stay competitive with the talent in our communities, while simultaneously rewarding and thanking our essential workers for their dedication to putting love into action,” Seiburg said.
Businesses say the higher unemployment payments have made it more difficult to hire workers as the economy recovers from the pandemic.
The Rescue Mission shut down its retail operations for more than two months last year, but business has surpassed pre-pandemic levels, Seiburg said.
