When the winter season rolls around, there’s nothing like decorating your home with all manner of holiday lights to get into the celebratory spirit. Sure, you could stick to the tried-and-true ways to display lights, such as wrapping a long string of bulbs around a tree in your front yard, but why not tap into your creative side with more surprising presentations? Below, we’ve rounded up five do-it-yourself light ideas that we personally can’t wait to try this year. Here’s to a bright season ahead.
Luminarias
Luminarias—bags with a candle or other light inside—create a beautiful warming glow that’s fitting for this time of year. You can line them up along the walkway leading to the entrance of your home for an illuminated welcome, cluster them by your front door, or place one at each window. Simply take a decorative paper or plastic bag, add rocks or sand to prevent it from falling over, and place a candle inside. (If you choose to use real candles instead of LED ones, be sure to monitor them closely for safety, avoid lighting them on windy nights, and extinguish them at the end of the evening.)

Hanging light globes add festivity anywhere in your home. We like to hang a single globe above our front entryway. Stringing several across your porch is another option and makes for a dramatic impact, as does hanging them from trees in your front yard. Make globes using wire baskets, floral wire, or mini lights—all of which you can find at Home Depot.
Mason jars
This one is the easiest light hack of all and has endless aesthetic appeal to boot. Buy mason jars from your local hardware store and put string lights inside, such as these copper wire firefly lights. But don’t stop there: You can top your jars with cut flowers instead of using the lids or wrap them with ribbon, twine, or decorative paper. For another twist, try apothecary jars instead and fill them with lights, fake snow, or holiday-themed figurines. Use them as table centerpieces or line them up against your windowsill—anything goes.
