The owners of 11th Hour Coffee are brothers Brayden and Joel Estby. Together they are bringing not only some of the best coffee beans around, but a delicious food menu that has evolved to more than just avocado toast — they do have a wide variety of delicious avocado toast.
These two Santa Cruz natives started their journey with a roaster bought on Craigslist. What followed was six years of hustling. They started at Corralitos farmers markets and raising money through crowdsourcing with Kickstarter. The brothers have built everything at 11th Hour Coffee — in the Food Lounge at 1001 Center St. No. 1 in Santa Cruz — by hand including the bar where coffee is served.
The brothers are about to open a second location in August on the Westside at the previous Kelly’s French Bakery location, 402 Ingalls St. No. 31.
Let’s get to the beans. Brayden and Joel carefully select the coffee beans for sweetness, keeping in mind harvesting ethics. Each batch of their premium beans are roasted in-house and packed by hand with packaging art work by Miranda Powell. Every design on the coffee bags represents a different concept. The artwork, the beans, and the unique wax seal with the 11th Hour Coffee logo on the packaging is all done with the highest quality and care.
The artwork of the packaging will soon be available for limited edition merchandise runs, so get ready for some cool hoodies and shirts coming to the 11th Hour Coffee stores.
Let’s talk about the food and drinks. Try out their biscuit sandwiches made in-house with eggs, bacon and a few varieties of biscuits. Is avocado toast your jam? They have six different avocado toast varieties to try and satisfy any taste bud.
The quality of all of their menu items are as local and organic as possible. India Joze chai is in all of their chai drinks, Mutari Chocolate is melted for their mochas, and their bread for their avocado toast comes from Companion Bakery.
Want a Nitro coffee? Grab their incredibly smooth Nitro. Not a coffee drinker? They have a Green Tea Nitro on tap with a few Kombuchas on tap as well. Their Honey Bee Latte is delectably sweet with some floral notes of lavender. One of their house favorites is the Golden Milk chai made with turmeric and black pepper.
Brayden and Joel Estby are also in the works of having some community events in the future to include Smash Bros game nights, poetry slams, and stand up comedy nights. They want their coffee shop to be a “Community Hub, a touchstone for the dialogue of the town.”
Get to 11th Hour Coffee to enjoy some food, a specialty drink and a bag of coffee to enjoy at home.
