CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A pedestrian was killed and a Lexus driver was seriously injured after a drunk driver ran a red light in northwest Charlotte early Saturday morning, Charlotte-Mecklenburg detectives say.
Officers responded to the collision between the two vehicles and a pedestrian around 2:45 a.m. on LaSalle Street.
The pedestrian was found lying on LaSalle Street near Beatties Ford Road with serious injuries when officers arrived at the scene, according to a news release.
Officers say also at the intersection of LaSalle Street and Taylor Avenue, they found a 2017 Mazda 3 and 2007 Lexus ES350 lying in the roadway with heavy damage.
The driver of the Lexus, identified as Denise Dunlap, was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries and the pedestrian, identified as Judy Sinclair, was taken with life-threatening injuries, according to a news release.
Detectives say Sinclair died at the hospital shortly after arriving and her family has been notified.
Initial investigation revealed the Mazda driver, 28-year-old Lisa Brown, was heading west on LaSalle Street when she failed to stop at a red light and struck Sinclair, who was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk.
Brown continued west on LaSalle Street after this collision and hit the Lexus, leaving the driver, Dunlap, with serious injuries, detectives say.
Officers arrested Brown at the scene and charged her with Felony Death by Motor Vehicle, Felony Hit & Run, Felony Serious Injury, Driving While Impaired, Careless and Reckless, Red Light Violation, and two counts of Failure to Reduce Speed.
Police say Brown is now in custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Speed and impairment are both contributing factors in this collision, according to a news release.
The investigation into this fatal crash remains active and ongoing.
