Webster County residents may have noticed an increased presence of sheriff’s deputies patrolling around the county this past week.
That is due to a shift scheduling change for the Webster County Sheriff’s Office. Previously, the department ran on three eight-hour shifts each day. Starting on July 1, the department switched to two 12-hour shifts each day.
This change benefits the department’s deputies by giving them more time off, Sheriff Luke Fleener said.
“The benefit for the officers is it lets them off every other weekend,” he said. “In our old rotation with eight-hour shifts, they got a weekend off every six weeks.”
The deputies’ union, Teamsters Local 238, voted to approve the new shift schedule and the Webster County Board of Supervisors approved the change in May. The supervisors had to approve the change because it created a small increase in the department’s budget because while the change does result in more days off for the deputies, it does increase the hours they work by 80 per calendar year.
It’s a win-win situation for both the deputies and the citizens of Webster County, Fleener said.
“There’s now four shifts of three deputies, when before we had times where there’s only two people working,” he said.
Having more deputies working during a shift means the department can increase its presence in the smaller towns around the county.
“One of the common complaints I heard when I was running for sheriff was that we don’t see deputies enough,” Fleener said.
The new shift schedule has only been in effect for a week, but the deputies seem to like it and it’s increased morale, the sheriff said.
“It seems like it’s energized them a little bit,” he said. “And 12 hours can be a long time, but our day goes by quick because there’s a lot of things going on.”
