Clinton, N.C. — A 19-year-old was arrested after a detention officer at the Sampson County jail was shot on her lunch hour Tuesday, authorities said.
Deputies responding to a reported shooting at 93 Waterhouse Circle in Clinton at about 1 p.m. found Zarya Ashley wounded inside the home. She was airlifted to an undisclosed hospital, where she was in critical condition, authorities said.
Investigators determined that Ashley had gone to the house during her lunch hour, and a dispute ensued between her and an acquaintance that led to her shooting, authorities said.
Following a lead, the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office and the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jahleek Joyner, 19, in connection with the shooting.
Joyner was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and possession of a firearm by felon.
Deputies learned that Joyner had four outstanding warrants on file for probation violations and served those at the time of his arrest. He was being held under a $100,000 bond.
On Wednesday, Ashley was still listed in critical condition.
Sampson County Sheriff Jimmy Thornton said Ashley had recently joined his office.
“She had a promising career ahead of herself and was loved by her co-workers," Thornton said in a statement. "We ask that you pray for the victim, her family and our sheriff’s office."
