As the industry nears June, video game companies are revealing more details of their flagship projects for 2021. Sega revealed a remaster called “Sonic Colors: Ultimate” and hinted at new work from the Sonic Team. Supermassive Games offered sneak peek at gameplay for their upcoming cinematic horror game “The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes.” Square Enix revealed a “Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate” and a beautiful remake of “Dragon Quest 3.”
It’s a ton of news to digest, but the two biggest Thursday announcements came from Guerrilla Games and Techland. The two studios revealed gameplay and information for their respective titles “Horizon Forbidden West” and “Dying Light 2: Staying Human.” Both have been announced months ago and generated their own hype, but information on the projects have been limited.
That changed when Sony and Guerrilla Games’ offered a fresh look at Aloy’s new adventure and relayed the story that brings her to San Francisco, one of the game’s locales. She’s in the Bay Area to look for technology that would fight a new threat to human existence. A red blight has fallen on the land ruining crops and Aloy, Erend and others are looking for technology to stop it. The problem is that they face a rebel tribes who have figured out how to control robotic creatures just like Aloy can. They ride velociraptor type creatures. They use mammothlike Tremortusk as portable fortresses. They seem to be more challenging than anything she faced in “Horizon Zero Dawn.”
To help her out, she has an array of new skills such a Focus Scanner that lets players know areas that she can use to climb. She also has a grappling hook that lets her climb walls and a Shield Wing, a hang glider that lets her fall to safety or attack from above. The increased maneuverability will be needed to traverse more intricate levels as she explore the ruins of cities and new biomes. One of the best things about the original “Horizon Zero Dawn” was the flexibility in combat. The developers gave players plenty of tools and they had to use every last one to defeat enemies and get through the game. Players couldn’t rely on one play style because the diversity of enemies required different tactics.
Guerrilla Games seems to double down on this idea in the sequel, and hopefully, like the original, “Horizon Forbidden West” will give players the same sense of discovery. Unfortunately, the one big thing missing from the announcement was a release date, but Sony said more details will emerge as the game gets closer to its planned launch.
“Dying Light 2: Stay Human” has been in development for what seems like forever. The game was announced in 2018, and not much has been revealed since. What they showed was promising and it was one of the more anticipated games. On Thursday, Techland threw the doors open on what players should expect, and it’s deeper and more intriguing than what many expected. In “Dying Light 2,” players are taken to a world where the zombies have won for the past 20 years. Governments have collapsed and humanity is on the brink living on rooftops while those infected by the Harran virus linger on the streets.
Amid this environment, players take on the role of Aiden Caldwell, a protagonist with remarkable parkour skills. He’ll play an important role in the fate of the few remaining cities on earth. Players will have to negotiate the relationship among three factions, who each have their own philosophy on survival. Helping one affects the ties with another. Players will have a lot of agency in how they mold a city filled with dangers from ruthless survivors and those mutated by the Harran virus.
Players have more than double the parkour moves to help with their survival. They’ll need those moves to face a more dynamic environment where the night holds more dangers with powerful infected. At the same time though, it holds rewards for players who venture into the monsters’ empty nests and search for valuable gear.Visually, the game is just as impressive as ever, but the most notable piece of news to come out of the “Dying Light 2” reveal is the release date. The game is scheduled to come out Dec. 7 on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
