'This was human error' Bridge fails to light up red, white, and blue for the 4th - HOI ABC

PEORIA (HOI) - This Fourth of July, there was a lack of patriotic lights on the Murray Baker Bridge. City leaders say that's because they forgot.

"Sometimes, when humans are involved, they make mistakes," Rick Powers, Director of Peoria Public Works said.

The bridge lights up every night, usually with colors corresponding to holidays or events. But on the Fourth, they just shone white.

One traffic engineer with Peoria Public Works is responsible for creating and programming any lighting schemes people have seen on the bridge so far. When special requests are made, like to mark the one-year anniversary of the pandemic, or National Organ Life Month, the engineer programs them. But it hasn't gone farther than that, like to program lights for federal holidays.

Powers says that's changing.

"This should be the last time you see any of the major holidays, where the light theme does not change," he said.

The engineer has taken all of the federal holidays and non-federal holidays and programmed them through 2022.

"Again, we're sorry," Powers added. "That's the biggest thing. Again this is a human being and he feels terribly about it and there's there's no other way to say it than that."

The bridge was originally fitted for lights in 1991, which later burned out. These lights were installed during construction on the 1-74 bridge. They first lit up October 2020.
