FLINT, MI -- Gamers on the Kettering University esports team are preparing for a 24-hour livestream to raise $5,000 for the Hurley Children’s Hospital in Flint tomorrow.
The esports team of nearly 40 members will begin streaming on the team’s Twitch channel at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13. The team partnered with Extra Life, a nonprofit that works to encourage gamers to raise money for hospitals.
“We just want to make this a great event for Hurley and raise a bunch of money for them,” said esports Head Coach Dan Nowaczyk.
Kettering will play multiple different games throughout the 24-hour stream, including competitive games like Overwatch, League of Legends, Rainbow Six Siege, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, Minecraft, Counter-Strike and Valorant.
Some students have experience with 24-hour streams before coming to Kettering. League of Legends player Lauren Ward used to host 24-hour gaming parties with her friends in Canada.
“I decided to participate because Hurley Children’s Hospital is a lifeline for so many kids in Flint,” Ward said. “They provide over 66 percent of the community’s uncompensated health care to citizens who have little or no health insurance. I support Hurley’s initiative as an organization, the brave kids who may be battling for their lives, and the wonderful staff who work long hours and stay strong for the families who need their care.”
Multiple team members expect to be participating for the whole 24-hours.
“I wanted to participate in the fundraiser because children deserve every opportunity to be healthy, and this is a good way to financially help those kids get that opportunity,” Rainbow Six Siege player Tom Shook said.
Kettering’s esports program started in January 2020. This is their first fundraiser.
