Syracuse, N.Y. — Several downtown and Syracuse University buildings were illuminated with a green glow Friday night.

But why?

Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon announced that from Friday until Nov. 13 the Courthouse, the Carnegie Building, the War Memorial and the Everson Museum will be lit up with green light as part of Operation Green Light.

This is a new collaborative initiative to support veterans of all military conflicts, with a special emphasis on the veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, McMahon said Friday in a news release. It is also meant to raise awareness about the challenges faced by many veterans and the resources that are available at the county, state and federal level, he said.

Syracuse University and their Office of Veteran and Military Affairs will also illuminate in green the Stadium, Hall of Languages and Hendricks Chapel in support of Operation Green Light, McMahon said.

In addition to lighting county and community buildings, residents are encouraged to participate by changing one light bulb in their house to a green bulb, McMahon said. This can be an exterior light that neighbors and passersby can see, or an interior light that sparks a conversation with friends, he said.

While this event is focused around the week of Veterans Day, participants are also encouraged to continue shining the light year-round, McMahon said. Residents can share their participation on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight. Veterans Day is on Thursday.
