Stefanie Hausman and her teenage daughter Uma Frost-Hausman launched a lawn sign business to spread joy, not germs during the coronavirus.
Since May, they have embellished Portland area front lawns with colorful, handmade signs announcing stay-at-home celebrations, from birthdays to bar mitzvahs.
People passing by and riding inside cars participating in orchestrated parades see pool noodles dressed like striped candles and messages made of large letters and original decorations.
Beckoning signs of congratulations from their business, Lawn Party NW, also serve as beacons for graduations, anniversaries and other socially distant celebrations taking place while it’s unsafe for groups to gather during the pandemic.
“We attended some drive-by parades and we thought that lawn decorations would add a festive flair,” says mom Stefanie Hausman. “We also wanted to do something that would bring joy to our community, but that was done from a distance and was waste-free.”
The handmade letters are reusable, unlike a greeting card, and are propped up with repurposed H-stakes from old election signs.
No face-to-face contact is needed. People can order a lawn greeting online at lawnpartynw.com or call 503-679-5301, and “they just wake up to a special surprise,” says Hausman.
The cost is $40 per decorative greeting – from “Marry Me?” to “Welcome Home” – on display for 24 hours. The price includes Portland area delivery, installation and pick up. A personalized message is an additional $10 and it’s $20 more for a second day.
The mother-and-daughter team also wanted their company to generate donations for nonprofits Portland Homeless Family Solutions COVID-19 Relief Fund and Don’t Shoot PDX, a six-year-old Black-led and community-driven organization that advocates for accountability to create social change.
When placing an order, people select an organization to receive a percentage of the cost as a donation, says Hausman.
Lawn Party NW’s debut was Uma’s birthday in May. Uma is a senior at Cleveland High School and her mom works in educational technology. Hausman says her past entrepreneurial venture was to introduce Skuut Balance Bikes to the Pacific Northwest.
So far, one their favorite lawn party commissions started near their Portland home.
“Our neighbor ordered a lawn birthday greeting for her friend’s son” who uses a wheelchair, says Hausman. “We set up the signs so that he could easily see them from his window. We heard that he was happily surprised and it made his 18th birthday more special.”
They also recently installed lawn signs alongside rubber ducks wearing a yarmulke and tallit to commemorate a bar mitzvah. “Parade goers drove by and took pictures with the boy in front of the signs,” says Hausman.
Are you ready to declare “We Love You” to someone special or “Thank You” to essential workers?
