All full-time, part-time and temporary employees at Henry Ford Health System will make at least $15 per hour starting Sunday, Oct. 11.

Of Henry Ford’s 33,000 employees, more than 3,000 of them don’t make at least $15 per hour and will see their pay increase through the program, the Detroit-based health system said in its Friday, Oct. 9 announcement. The change is projected to cost the health system $6 million per year.

Some of the most common positions affected include environmental services associates, nurse assistants, food services assistants, health screeners and clinic services representatives.

Michigan’s minimum wage is $9.65 per hour and increases to $9.87 per hour in 2021.

For a 40-hour-per-week job, $9.65 per hour equates to about $20,000 per year. At $15 per hour, that comes out to just more than $31,000 annually.

“There is a strong association between financial health and security and overall health, a reality that has been driven home over the last eight months for our team members who are on the front lines of the fight against COVID-19,” said Wright Lassiter III, President and CEO of Henry Ford Health System, in a news release. “We are passionate about the need to do this and are thrilled to be able to make it happen, especially now.”

The $15-per-hour also applies for union jobs, affecting about 400 employees. The health system also plans to increase pay for other employees before 2020 ends, it said in the news release.

Henry Ford Health System has six hospitals – in Detroit, Clinton Township, Wyandotte, West Bloomfield, Jackson and a psychiatric hospital in Royal Oak. It also has more than 250 outpatient facilities across southeast and south-central Michigan.
