A Grand Forks man is in custody following a late-night hours-long standoff with law enforcement at a rural Grand Forks County home on Monday, Oct. 26.
Chad Allen Ostlund, 46, has been charged with burglary and refusal to halt after allegedly unlawfully entering a home Monday night, then barricading himself in that home for nearly six hours. He was apprehended around 4:30 a.m., when he tried to flee out a back window.
Deputies were dispatched to the residence at 1747 23rd Ave. N.E. just after 10:30 p.m. Monday for a report of a criminal trespass in progress, according to a release from the Grand Forks County Sheriff's Office.
The release stated that the caller arrived home to find a man standing in her residence. When deputies tried to contact the man, later identified as Ostlund, he fled further inside the house. Because there were weapons inside the house to which Ostlund had access, deputies set up a perimeter and a PA system to command Ostlund to exit the house. He made no attempt to comply, according to the release.
Ostlund left the house at about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday from a basement window and attempted to flee into a wooded area. He was apprehended by SWAT. The incident remains under investigation, the release states.
Grand Forks County Sheriff's deputies were assisted by the Grand Forks Special Operations Group, which consists of Regional SWAT, Grand Forks Regional Bomb Squad, Grand Forks Regional Crisis Negotiations Team, the Northeast Regional UAS Team and Altru.
