Multiple people were transported to local hospitals on Sunday afternoon, after Indianapolis fire officials said a woman ran a red light and crashed into a fire engine, causing a multivehicle accident crash on the east side.

A 21-year-old woman driving a Ford Fusion eastbound on 10th Street failed to yield and struck an oncoming fire truck heading north on Arlington Avenue that had its sirens and lights activated, according to a news release from the Indianapolis Fire Department. The crash occurred at around 12:34 p.m., IFD said, as the fire engine was headed to a possible fire.

The fire engine then struck another vehicle, which was pushed into a third vehicle, witnesses told Indianapolis police. Those collisions caused injuries to people in those vehicles.

There were four firefighters on board who were shaken up, but not hurt in the crash. Those firefighters, who were wearing seat belts, immediately cared for the other people involved in the crash, who were later sent to hospitals, IFD said.

A man and his young daughter riding in a Toyota Prius were taken to Community Hospital East; both were wearing seat belts. Another man in a Mitsubishi Eclipse was taken to Community Hospital North. Both cars were stopped at the traffic light and in the turn lane to head east on 10th Street, when the crash occurred.

A man who was a passenger in the Ford Fusion was transported to Community Hospital North. The driver of the Fusion declined to be transported to the hospital.

The fire truck sustained considerable damage. The impact had left part of the Fusion's bumper and front license plate embedded in the wheel. The cab is misaligned with the rest of the truck.

There is no word yet on whether charges will be filed in the crash, a spokesman for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said.

The fire department did not name anyone involved in the crash.
