ROXBURY, NJ - The township is expected to be blanketed with up to two inches of snow per hour for about 12 hours tomorrow and residents are being asked to make sure no vehicles are left parked on roads.
"Our major winter storm is rapidly approaching the area," said a forecast provided to the Roxbury Department of Public Works (DPW) by WeatherWorks of Hackettstown. "Some flurries can develop during the early afternoon, but dry air should prevent steadier light snow from moving in until 3 p.m. to 6 p.m."
The company, hired by the township to help the DPW prepare for storms, said the dry air "is strong and there may be a few hour difference from when snow begins in Southern Morris vs Northern Morris."
While snowfall rates are expected to be light to moderate tonight, Roxbury is likely to get pounded as night turns into day tomorrow, warned the forecasters.
"The heaviest snow falls from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow," said WeatherWorks. "During this time, bands of heavy snow will move through" and produce one to two inches per hour at times," it predicted.
Residents should expect gusty winds to result in snow drifts before the snowfall rates lighten Monday evening. However, although the rate of accumulation will wane Monday night, the snow is not expected to stop until Tuesday afternoon, WeatherWorks said.
It said total accumulations are likely to peak at 18 inches, but there's a 35 percent chance they could exceed two feet in depth.
DPW Director Rick Blood sent an alert today asking people to keep roads free of parked vehicles, trailers and basketball hoops so that township plow crews can do their work.
