Patriots Hall of Famer Matt Light, a noted locker-room prankster during his time in New England, can’t refuse a good ruse.

So when Light heard of a scheme aimed at Chiefs fullback Anthony Sherman, the former left tackle had to join in.

Light first got a call from his friend Adam LaRoche, a former baseball player who played with several teams, including the Red Sox. LaRoche wanted to enlist his help for a bit of payback.

As the story goes, Sherman, a former UConn standout and the 2006 Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year from North Attleboro High School, once dumped roughly 12,000 unwrapped Oreos through the sunroof of LaRoche’s car. Naturally, LaRoche had to exact a measure of revenge.

So together with Light and Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt, he hatched a plan to raffle Sherman’s prized Ford F250 truck off for charity this week.

“(Sherman) made the fatal mistake of messing with Rochie,” Light told the Herald. “So … Dustin saw the code to get into his iPhone, found out the password to get into his Twitter account, and then we launched this campaign.”

After Colquitt tweeted from Sherman’s phone, the Chiefs left for practice, and the campaign caught like wildfire. Several celebrities retweeted Sherman’s message and patted him on the back for announcing he’d donated his truck to the E3 Ranch Foundation to help support combat veterans and fight sex trafficking.

“You have everybody jumping on board,” Light said. “Big-time people like Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, all these country music artists, Bo Jackson, they’re all congratulating this dude, and how awesome it was he was doing this. So what was he going to do? Say no?’’

Hours later, Sherman returned to his phone and was stunned. But, he ultimately embraced it.

“I realized I didn’t have many options, so you better buy in and enjoy the ride this is going to take us on. It’s just a truck to me,” Sherman said on a video call Thursday. “It’s obviously my baby, and I take care of it. But it’s just a truck, and if we can raise a ton of money for a great cause, it’ll be well worth it, for sure.”

Said Light: “It’s great guys can still have fun in the locker room, and still have a big impact in their community while they’re doing it. And the fact he adopted this thing . . . it’s great. It was a joke, but everyone needs a laugh right now.”
