It may seem like a little late for Christmas lights.
Danielle Carson, a Liverpool resident, said it felt right to leave them up because these Christmas lights mean more than color in her yard.
“I think about my dad," said Carson. "And I think about how he always used to put up Christmas lights to try and make everybody else smile."
Carson's dad, Ron, lives across the street.
“I think about the happiness he brings, and I’m trying to bring that to the people over there," said Carson.
Across the street is Keepsake Village at Greenpoint, a memory care facility for seniors. Ron probably can't see the lights from his window, but his caregivers see them when they're leaving work. For Carson, that's all that matters.
“This pandemic, it's just crazy for everybody, right?" said Carson. "But not everybody is necessarily remembering these amazing men and women that are helping our loved ones in facilities like this."
Ron is 74 and he’s lived at Keepsake Village for about a year and a half. Carson said her dad knew memory care was in his future, and she's lucky there's a great facility across the street from her home. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, she can only peek through the window.
“We haven’t seen him in almost a year at this point," said Carson. "These are the people that wrap their arms around him. When he’s feeling down, these are the people that cheer him up.”
Ron loves his daughter's dogs. He’s an army veteran who served in the Vietnam War, and he loves to smile.
“I lost my mom to physical ailments. Now losing my father to mental ailments, I feel for myself this is infinitely harder. When I cry, I cry for me," said Carson. "He’s doing amazing. He really is, and it’s because of the wonderful people over there and the care they give him.”
So Carson is doing everything she can to light up his world — and hers.
