The city raft will be back out on Lake Belle Taine, since there are no mask requirements or restrictions on outdoor gatherings. The parks will be open as usual, too.

At the May 10 meeting, the council also approved the Nevis Civic and Commerce Association using city facilities and equipment for their summer activities, including using the Muskie food stand as in year’s past.

Events on the chamber calendar include the Cirks fishing tourney June 11, Sites ’n Bites June 13, pig races July 23, Muskie Days July 24, the city-wide garage sale Aug 7, and the Northwoods Triathlon Aug. 14.

The fire department is also planning to apply for a food license to host a pancake breakfast the Sunday following Muskie Days, July 25, at the fire hall.

Mayor Jeanne Thompson told the council that the city has learned that the municipal liquor store cannot charge to get into their parking lot or sell wristbands to enter since it is a city entity.

“We can still have bands, but because we’re just coming off COVID, it’s not going to be as big as we did it the last time (for Muskie Days),” liquor store manager Erin Rhoades said. “That was $10,000 for the stage alone, plus the cost of the bands.”

In other business, the council:

  • Discussed concerns of a resident who lives about a half mile from the water tower about how loudly music is being played during summer events and how late, sometimes until 1 a.m. The resident suggested having music end by 11 p.m. on weekdays and midnight on weekends. The city ordinance does not currently list a time. The council asked city clerk Dawn Veit to add this stipulation to the noise ordinance and bring a draft to the next regular meeting for action.

  • Heard the defective part on the new city playground has been fixed.

  • Recognized Boy Scout Tyler Lindow for his work putting in the stairs at the beach and the other Scouts who helped out.

  • Approved a request for a 3.2 liquor license for Joe Ganley for the Shenanigan’s stage area grounds.

  • Approved the low bid of $3,400 from Kelly Rittgers for removal of five trees at the city cemetery after Memorial Day.

  • Heard the municipal liquor store will be hiring a stocker who is 21 or older to replace an employee who is leaving, and advertising for another part-time bartender for summer.

  • Adopted resolutions accepting donations from the Nevis Fire Relief Association to the Nevis City Volunteer Fire Department for operating supplies and equipment and closing the Fire Department community emergency fund, used to help fire victims, with the balance to be transferred to Nevis Fire Relief so they can more easily disburse the aid.

  • Adopted a resolution closing the sewer debt retirement savings account at Northwoods Bank, with the balance to be transferred to the sewer replacement savings account.

  • Set a planning and zoning meeting for 6 p.m. Monday, May 24 in the city council meeting room.

The next regular council meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, June 14 at city hall.
