WOODSFIELD — Two Black Diamond Girl Scouts are working to raise funds to complete a community service project that will help them obtain their Silver Award.
Allie Isaly and Leah Hutchinson, both 14, along with Hutchinson’s mother Misty Yontz, met with the Monroe County Board of Commissioners on Monday afternoon to talk about their community service project and what they are doing to complete it. Isaly said they are collecting donations to purchase and install a series of LED lights around the horse arena at the Monroe County Fairgrounds in Woodsfield. Both girls are active in 4-H as well as Scouts and show horses at the fairgrounds.
“It’s a safety issue,” Isaly said of the arena’s current lighting situation.
“It’s much harder to see things without the lights at the ends of the arena,” Hutchinson added.
Islay said they plan to keep the current lights in place and install additional lights and fixtures throughout the entire arena. The arena’s current lights do not provide much illumination to the area at night and have become a concern for evening riders. The girls believe new lighting will help diminish accidents caused by dim lighting and also provide light for equestrian practices and events.
Hutchinson said there are typically shows going on throughout the day, leaving nights as the only time available for their practices.
The estimated $7,500 project will help the girls obtain their Silver Award, the second highest award a Girl Scout can earn. Islay said the award is meant to teach participants leadership, networking, communication and to help the community.
So far the girls have raised $1,870 from members of the community, according to Yontz, who is assisting the girls with the project.
“Any donations they are getting, they are also offering to do something back for the people who donated. They’ve offered to wash windows, weed flower beds, pick up trash in an area — anything doable for these two girls,” she added. “This is a community service project that will benefit the community for years to come.”
In order to complete the project by their deadline of Sept. 30, they must raise the necessary funds by Aug. 6.
“We want to get it done in time for the fair,” Hutchinson said.
The duo has a few upcoming fundraising events scheduled to help in their efforts. Commissioner Mick Schumacher offered the girls the Monroe County Theatre as a location to hold their bake sale on July 2. On July 10, they will hold a “horse fun show” at the fairgrounds, where attendees can participate and learn various tricks while on horseback. Yontz said they are also planning a spaghetti dinner for July 24 but are still in need of a location to hold the event. Commissioner Diane Burkhart said she would try to secure the Brown Community Center in Woodsfield for the dinner.
Toward the end of the meeting, both commissioners offered to donate funds to the cause. Schumacher and Burkhart each wrote checks, from their personal accounts, to go toward the project. Commissioner Bill Bolon was absent.
“It’s a very admirable project,” Schumacher said.
Anyone wishing to donate to the project can do so by contacting Yontz at 740-213-8604. She said they prefer to come meet those making donations to establish more connection with those in the community, which is one of the purposes of the project.
“If there’s anything we can do for anybody, because that’s what we’re also offering (for the donations). … That’s what Girl Scouts are for — Girl Scouts help out their community,” she said.
