This Monday, February 21, began perhaps the most important week since the MLB owners imposed the lockout on the players last December 2, since, in order not to suffer major modifications to the regular season schedule and have to postpone the March 31 start date, the Major Leagues have imposed a deadline of February 28 to reach an agreement with the MLBPA on the next Collective Bargaining Agreement.
In that spirit, Monday's meeting between the owners and the Players Association was the longest since the lockout was made official, as according to several reports the meetings lasted about five hours, however, those same reports are not too optimistic, as it is known that most of the time they were in separate rooms making proposals for negotiations, without generating major changes yet.
The major differences between MLB and MLBPA
Among the main economic differences discussed were the bonus pool for pre-arbitration players, the number of lottery picks in the Draft and the proposed new luxury tax.
Although MLB offered better conditions to the players, it is known that progress was minimal, according to Evan Drellich of The Athletic, so an agreement is not expected in the immediate future.
The good news is that there are already meetings scheduled between MLB and the MLBPA for every day of the week.
Different conclusions from both sides
Apparently the interpretation of Monday's meeting from both sides is also diverse as according to Newsday's Tim Haley, the MLBPA is disappointed after the meeting, while, according to the same source, the MLB described the negotiation as "wide-ranging and productive."
There are many issues to be addressed, and MLB has the right to lift the lockout whenever it wishes and begin activity under the terms of the old Collective Bargaining Agreement, although that doesn't look likely.
