STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Borough residents participated in the “Light up Staten Island” event Sunday night to show their support to those suffering through the coronavirus pandemic.
Organized by community leaders Vienna Profeta and Frank Dillon, the event gave Staten Islanders the opportunity to show their support while maintaining safe social distancing practices.
Dillon and Profeta, who both participated outside Dillon’s Todt Hill home, asked participants to light a candle, or turn on their flashlight or cellphone while praying, meditating, and mourning those lost to the pandemic.
“We have to believe that this is going to end, and we have to do it together,” Profeta said. “Strength does it together -- unity and groups.”

Residents across the island participated in the event, and it drew the support of Borough President James Oddo and Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R-East Shore/South Brooklyn).
The lights of Wagner College’s Main Hall were lit blue as part of the event. The school’s President Joel Martin and his wife Jan Martin also participated in the event.
“I want to thank Vienna and Frank for inviting me to participate in this touching tribute to all we’ve lost,” Malliotakis said last week.
“Everyone has been impacted and 'Light Up Staten Island’ will provide all with an opportunity to come together with their neighbors in a positive and safe way.”
