(MURFREESBORO) Data from the Child Advocacy Center shows that more than 80% of child sexual abuse occurs in isolated one-on-one situations. The local group's Darkness to Light training provides the framework to protect children from child sexual abuse, and the local non-profit is offering it for free.

Darkness to Light training teaches adults how to create safer environments for children by eliminating one-on-one situations.

Child Advocacy Center Community Education Coordinator Brittnie Noble said, "We need to avoid leaving our kids in one-on-one isolated situations. We need to make sure that daycares, summer programs, and after school programs our children attend are screening their employees. This will significantly reduce the risk to our kids."

With Darkness to Light training you can minimize the opportunity for someone to sexually abuse your child through the following actions:

  • Think carefully about the safety of any isolated, one-on-one settings. Make sure interactions with children can be observed and interrupted. When possible choose group situations.
  • Think carefully about the safety of situations in which older youth have access to younger children. Make sure adults are present who can supervise.
  • Understand that abusers often become friendly with potential victims and their families, enjoying family activities, earning trust, and gaining time alone with children.
  • Monitor your children's Internet use. Offenders use the Internet to lure children into sexual contact.

Noble concluded, "As a Darkness to Light facilitator, I am often asked about babysitting and how to make babysitting situations safer. I encourage parents to do in-person interviews, background checks, and check references--just like you hire any other employee. Then tell your babysitter what time you will be home and return early to see what is happening while you are gone."
