BAY CITY, MI — A four-hour standoff with police ended with a Bay City man lodged in the jail.
At 4:06 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30, Bay City public safety officers responded to a 911 call at a residence in the 1900 block of South Alp Street on the city’s West Side. Officers had received information that a 41-year-old woman and two children, ages 7 and 3, were being held in the residence against their will by a man who was known to them.
Officers eventually contacted the woman and were able to safely remove her and her children from the house. Members of the Michigan State Police Emergency Services Team and Canine Unit located a 37-year-old man hiding in the residence. Police took the man into custody at 8:15 p.m. on an outstanding felony warrant for burglary.
The suspect, who does not reside at the Alp Street location, had threatened the woman, Bay City Public Safety Capt. John Harned said. The suspect was not believed to have been armed when in the presence of the woman and her children, but officers did not know if he had armed himself by the time he hid in the house, Harned said.
Neither the woman nor her children were physically harmed during the ordeal, Harned said.
The Bay City Department of Public Safety was assisted at the scene by the FBI Mid-Michigan Safe Streets Task Force, Bay County Sheriff’s Office’s Canine Unit, and the Michigan State Police Emergency Services Team and Canine Unit.
The arrested man’s name is being withheld pending arraignment.
