Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) reported a magnitude 4.5 quake in Mexico near the town of Puerto Ángel only 27 minutes ago. The earthquake happened early morning on Sunday 25 October at 1.58 am local time at a shallow depth of 17 km. The magnitude, exact epicenter location and depth of the quake are likely to be revised within the next few hours as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER) agency, which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows etc.
Towns or cities near the epicenter that are likely to be affected include Puerto Ángel (pop. 2,600) at a distance of 20 km with light shaking, El Colorado (pop. 800) at a distance of 24 km with light shaking, Salina Cruz (pop. 73,600) at a distance of 147 km with very weak shaking, and Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán (pop. 61,800) at a distance of 172 km with very weak shaking.
