MECOSTA, OSCEOLA COUNTIES — Although many nonprofit events and fundraisers had to be canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Angels of Action is still hoping to bring the issue of childhood hunger to light this year.

The organization will be hosting a new socially distanced event, "Shine a Light on Childhood Hunger," in replacement of its Light up the Night event which takes place at Century 21 White House Realty each year.

Angels of Action Director of Fund Development Jacqui Gorczewicz said they were sad to have to cancel Light up the Night, but are excited to bring a new event to the community.

"Due to COVID restrictions and the increase in cases in the area, we just felt we should play our part in keeping everyone safe," she said. "This new event originally came about because we thought it was a great idea to bring unity and awareness (about childhood hunger) to the community."

The new "Shine a Light on Childhood Hunger" event is set for 6-8 p.m. Nov. 6 and encourages all businesses and residents to turn their lights on outside during these hours.

To further spread awareness of childhood hunger and Angels of Actions' mission, Gorczewicz said people are encouraged to take a photo or selfie or make a short video outside their home and post in on Facebook or Instagram with the hashtags "LUTN" or "LUTN2020."

People voted to have the most creative pictures or videos could even win a selection of prizes, Gorczewicz said.

She said this is a chance for people to get involved and be united even though they can't physically be together.

Big Rapids Mayor Tom Hogenson said he is excited for the event and will be participating by lighting up city buildings during the event hours.

"We look forward to joining our neighbors and friends in this celebration of unity and humanity, and we appeal to everyone who reads this to turn on all the lights, brighten our corner of the world and smile, knowing that we can work miracles together," he said.

Gorczewicz added Angels of Action has recently started expanding services into Osceola County, and hopes people in these communities will participate in the event as well.

In addition to turning on the lights, people can support Angels of Action by donating online at angelsofaction.org.
