NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WKBW) — The Salvation Army is working with Sheraton Niagara Falls for the 24-Hour Red Kettle Marathon.
Salvation Army Commander Major Stephen Carroll will stand outside the hotel for 24 hours to bring attention to the needs of families this holiday season.
"Well, I tried to get a good night's sleep last night, I drank some tea and went right to bed," he said
The Salvation Army continues its efforts feed communities hardest hit by COVID-19.
"The kettles are actually doing well where we have them," said Carroll. "The problem is that with the virus surging, and if we have to pull in the pots early, and we don't make out goal those are resources that we can't use at a time when we need them the most."
But Carroll won't be alone; members of the Justice League of WNY will stop by and help out.
"I love volunteer work because of the giving back to the community. The community is an amazing group of people so it's definitely something that's rewarding, it's a good feeling to do it," said Kimberly Gross, who was portraying X-Men's Rogue.
The goal this year is to raise $100,000 for the Niagara Falls community.
Since March, the Salvation Army gave out more than 50,000 meals worth of food, which is six times the food they served last year.
You can donate both in person and online on the Salvation Army's Facebook page.
"People need hope, they need something to look forward to, something to lift them up if they fall down. And not everyone can get up on their own so Salvation Army is there if they need it," said Gross.
