Boston will be providing two hours of free parking in commercial areas on Saturdays in an effort to support businesses hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic during the holiday season.
Beginning this Saturday, Nov. 28 through Dec. 6, shoppers will be able to park for free at any of the city’s 8,000 metered spaces, officials said this week.
“While shopping during the holiday season will look different this year, we are doing more than ever to help our small businesses get through a very difficult time,” Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said in a statement. “Our small businesses contribute so much to our local economy, and I encourage everyone to shop safely and shop local this year.”
The metered spots are located throughout Boston’s downtown and residential neighborhoods that host commercial districts, including Boston’s Main Streets.
The city is also offering a holiday discount for the Bluebikes bike-sharing program, including a 30% discount on annual memberships on Nov. 30. Free 90-day bike passes are still available for employees in retail shops and restaurants, officials said.
Earlier this week, Walsh said the city will not move forward with Step 2 of Phase 3 of the state’s reopening plan. But officials say they saw a decline in coronavirus cases across the city over last week.
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh on Wednesday said the community COVID-19 positivity rate declined to 4% citywide the week ending in Nov. 20.
