For some reason, the Debbie Boone hit song from 1977 “You Light Up My Life" comes to my mind. The only reason I know the song is it was played often during my two years of study hall at Williston Junior High School. The song begins with, “So many nights I’d sit by my window …” The lyrics get sketchy and inaccurate in my mind after that.
I look up the lyrics with a computer search. Along with the lyrics come videos of other artists who sang the song after Debbie Boone did. Whitney Houston has a soulful rendition, with impeccable compelling runs, as only Whitney could sing. We remember her life marred by significant tragedy.
LeAnn Rimes sings a beautiful version with a deep, rich, full pop country twist. Rimes has faced struggles and pain in her life. She became a musical star at age 13, filed a lawsuit against her father and former manager at age 18, claiming they stole $7 million from her. Her first marriage, at age 19, ended seven years later when she had an affair with a married man. Two years later she checked into treatment for anxiety and stress.
The lyrics of the song go on to say, “So many nights I'd sit by my window, waiting for someone to sing me his song, so many dreams I kept deep inside me, alone in the dark, but now you've come along, and you light up my life, you give me hope to carry on, you light up my days and fill my nights with song.”
Where and who we turn to for light and life, hope and health, really matters. We are all on a journey. We all have a story. None of us are finished products. How we close this chapter influences the next chapter. We will soon enter December. I find myself cherishing Christmas lights more than ever. The darkness and discouragement are thick. Light is critical.
John, who lived when Jesus did, toward the end of his life, declared that in Jesus, “was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” He goes on to say that Jesus was “the true light that gives light to everyone.”

I need the light of Jesus more now than ever before. As John teaches us “to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” I may not always “feel” the blessings of God’s family, but I choose to believe, receive, and walk in faith and trust with courage and strength.
I am so grateful, everlasting, eternal, beyond words, grateful that the “Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” I have seen his glory in the past. I anticipate his glory to expand in the days and years to come, personally and together with all of God’s children!
