Brian A. Pounds / Hearst Connecticut MediaSTRATFORD — Five people were rescued after a two-hour search for a 28-foot boat that ran aground near the mouth of the Housatonic River Saturday evening, fire officials said.
Stratford Fire Dispatch received a 911 call around 6:30 p.m. reporting that a boat had struck a rock jetty and was disabled. A second 911 call reported that the vessel was on the rocks, and carrying five people.
Using their 16-foot inflatable Zodiac boat, Stratford firefighters searched the area for 45 minutes without finding the vessel in distress. Firefighters were headed to shore when the U.S. Coast Guard contacted the department, seeking help responding to a distress call.
Stratford’s main fireboat was returning from an assignment when it joined the call, and the boat in distress was found off the former Stratford Army Engine Plant around 8:30 p.m.
The firefighters rescued the five people and transported them to shore for evaluation.
The boat, which was completely out of the water and listing at 45 degrees, according to the Stratford Fire Department, was towed to shore by SeaTow.
Stratford Fire Marshal Robert Daniel reminded boaters to carry the proper emergency equipment and be familiar with its use, as well as emergency procedures.
