FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - While COVID-19 cases are surging, testing locations across Allen County are feeling the effects.
Anatstasia Holscher says she had all the symptoms of COVID-19 but testing locations in her area were booked full and the lines were too long.
“I went to go set up a test, and it was like no tests were available,” Holscher said. “Like I have to drive two hours to get a test.”
After scheduling a test almost a week out, her results didn’t come for almost another week.
"It’s really anxiety inducing and people are kind of panicked, I was super panicked,” Holscher said.
Cole Bruick says he and his girlfriend both tested positive a month ago.
"I got out of breath just walking to the mailbox,” Bruick said. "Just with the influx of how many people are getting tested it’s taking longer.”
He says he recovered in about a week and just needs a negative test to return to work, but now he’s been tested three times.
“I waited like an hour each time,” Bruick said.
He says each test still returns positive and his job had to put him on short term disability.
“I called them and I said hey, what do you want me to do,” Bruick said. “Come in or do I need to get a test somewhere else like what’s going on.”
As cases surge, he says testing is getting harder forcing him wait even longer to return to work.
“I’ve heard horror stories of people testing positive 3-4 months at a time, so I could be out until the first of the year, I don’t know,” Bruick said.
State health officials say they are looking for solutions to the COVID-19 testing delays, such as, making sure there are enough resources and adding more testing locations.
