The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 12,438 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, exceeding by more than 2,000 the previous record for new infections reported in a 24-hour period in the state, which was set Friday.

Since last weekend, the state seen a record number of new cases in a single day four times.

Another 75 deaths linked to the coronavirus were reported Saturday by health officials, bringing the total death count to 10,154 since the first infection was reported in Illinois in January.

The seven-day statewide positivity rate for cases as a percentage of total tests is now 10.3%, IDPH reported Saturday. A week ago, that rate was 7.5%. Test positivity across the state — the number of positive tests as a percentage of total tests — is 11.5%. That rate is similar both in Cook County (11.6%) and Chicago (11.4%), IDPH regional data shows.

Each of the state’s 11 regions is now operating under tightened restrictions outlined in the Restore Illinois resurgence plan — including a suspension of indoor service at bars and restaurants. In addition, 75 counties and the city of Chicago are reported to be at a warning level for the virus, a designation meant to inform local communities of an increased risk of COVID-19.

“We’re on the verge,” Gov. J.B. Pritzker said Friday, noting that the number of cases has been moving in a linear fashion upwards but may soon reach an “inflection point” where there would be exponential growth as there was in the spring. “If it does (go exponential), then we’ll be in a world of hurt. We’re in, you know, a bad situation now.”

Shortly after his press briefing Friday, Pritzker announced he would once again enter isolation pending a COVID-19 test prompted by a recent exposure to someone who has tested positive for the coronavirus.

On Saturday, his office announced that Pritzker and his staff members had tested negative for the virus. Per CDC guidelines, Pritzker will not be required to quarantine for 14 days, his office said.
