UPPER SANDUSKY – Upper Sandusky’s Winter Fantasy of Lights will light up the night sky for another season beginning Dec. 1, offering visitors a spectacular lightshow all month long.

The 24th annual holiday extravaganza, which features millions of LED lights, is spread out over 33 acres in Harrison Smith Park, just east of downtown. This year’s featured display is called “A Home for the Holidays,” sponsored by All Species Adoption Program.

“It’s a pretty well-oiled machine, and certainly a good committee to work with,” said longtime chairperson Pat Eyestone. “We are anticipating a good turnout. We kind of think everyone’s just ready to do something that’s normal and get back to traditions.”

And what better way than a tradition near and dear to Wyandot County. A city park aglow with colored lights, animation and 87 one-of-a-kind displays. Horse-drawn carriage rides through the park. And proceeds to benefit the county’s three food pantries and those in need.

Organizers have added two carriage rides to this year’s lineup, Eyestone said, which operate in any weather. Reservations are required. In addition, the Fantasy Walk has been expanded to two nights – Nov. 29 and 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. – since weather forced its cancellation last year.

Eyestone said hundreds of volunteers started transforming the park in October, unloading two semi-trailers packed with light strands, extension cords and themed displays. Ground lighting crews have already been to work, she said, while others have stepped up to man at the gates and do other tasks.

“It’s not just straight wire figures that you get at Bronner’s or other stores and stick in the ground,” Eyestone said. “It’s definitely a community thing. It doesn’t happen without getting everyone involved. We’re very fortunate for a town this size to have a lot of community support.”

Upper Sandusky’s tribute to the holiday season began in 1997 with a small lightshow and only 10 displays, she said. But Fantasy of Lights has steadily grown over the years, drawing visitors far and wide, and so has the amount of money raised for charitable organizations, she said.

“The money raised has increased significantly,” said Eyestone, who has chaired the event since 2009. “The big nights though are on the weekends. It’s exciting to go uptown and see how far back the line of cars is and look at all the license plates. It’s amazing.”

Eyestone said she has seen license plates from as far away as Dayton and that first-timers have even braved the fog for a trip to the popular display on East Wyandot Avenue. “It’s a tradition for a lot of people and the people you talk to they say, ‘We come every year. We wouldn’t miss it.’”

The drive-through show opens at 6 p.m. Dec. 1-30. Admission is $5 Monday through Thursday and $10 a car Friday through Sunday. Proceeds this year will benefit the Star Players, St. Peter Catholic School and the HHWP Community Action Commission Head Start program.

The Fantasy Walk, which was cancelled last year because of the weather will be held Nov. 29 and 30.

Volunteers began the massive undertaking in October, she said, by unloading a semi-trailer of colored LED lights and extension cords. Other crews started setting up a total of 87 animated displays, each with a different theme. “It’s not just straight wire figures that you get at Bronner’s and stick in the ground,” she said.
