The US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has issued a favorable environmental assessment for the Northern Lights 2021 Expansion, allowing it to move forward. The Northern Natural Gas (Northern) project will serve the firm transportation requirements of Northern’s customers associated with increased energy needs, which were identified through an open season held 2019.

The project will be located in the Minnesota, USA, counties of Dakota, Scott, Carlton, Morrison, and Pine. Northern will construct an extension of its Willmar D Branch Line and an interconnect loop; replace the Viking Interconnect Branch Line; construct a new compressor station (Hinckley Compressor Station); and modify the Pierz Compressor Station and interconnect.

Hinckley Compressor Station will utilize one 11,153-hp (8320-kW) Solar Taurus 70 gas turbine. Modifications to the Pierz Compressor Station and interconnect includes the addition of one 1100-hp (820-kW) electric motor-driven reciprocating compressor unit.
