Brightening up a dark time, the Falmouth Art Center’s new January exhibit is “Let There Be Light.”

The show in the Hermann Gallery features 107 works by 77 local artists, mostly from the Upper Cape towns of Falmouth, Mashpee, Bourne and Sandwich.

So many people submitted work to the show that the center is using an additional room to display the work. “We know from this show and others we have had over the past months that our local artists have been busy and they are engaged in creating artwork during this time,” Falmouth Art Center Executive Director Laura Reckford said.

The mediums used by the artists vary widely. There are oils, acrylics, pastels and watercolors on canvas along with photography, pen and ink drawings, fiber works and printmaking. But there are also unusual collage and mixed media pieces, including a sculpture called “Inaugural Beacon” made partly of lightbulbs by Amy Rader of Falmouth; a small house made out of found objects and lit by tiny lights, made by Tina Newcombe of East Falmouth; and a quilt inspired by the Sudoku numbers game by Liz Henry of Bourne.

There is also work in wood, stained glass and ceramics.

“This is a show with a theme meant to inspire us with images of light, light as a contrast to darkness or themes of light,” said Ms. Reckford, who called the show “inspiring.”“Let There Be Light” runs to February 1.

The Falmouth Art Center located at 137 Gifford Street in Falmouth is free and open to the public daily, Mondays through Fridays, 9 AM to 4 PM; Saturdays 10 AM to 2 PM and Sundays 1 to 4 PM.
