The 2021 Rose Parade during the COVID-19 pandemic was not your traditional live five and a half mile showcase of floats, marching bands and equestrian units. Instead, the annual gathering transformed into a two-hour virtual event combining history, celebrity cameos and pre-recorded musical performances.
The absence of the much-anticipated annual parade was felt across Southern California, especially Pasadena, as well as on social media.
These were some of the highlights of the 2021 remix of the Rose Parade:
1. With the traditional parade canceled due to the coronavirus, the morning of Jan. 1, 2021, was a morning like no other. But some folks came out to form their own memories and dream of 2022.
2. A special conductor named Kermit the Frog helped unite the 14 marching bands via video. The good news is that the bands will have another opportunity to play in the 2022 Rose Parade. And yes, Kermit wore a tuxedo and did his arm-wave at the end of the set.
3. Speaking of marching bands, people on social media gave their kudos to the high school seniors who had a chance to showcase their talent on TV when they lost their opportunity to march in the 2021 parade.
4. These were the initial reactions to the start of the reimagined event. It was mixed with nostalgia, sadness and many other feelings. We imagine it to look something like this:
5. Throughout the show, people took to Twitter to comment on getting a rare behind-the-scenes look at creating the floats to watching country-heavy musical performances which included Tori Kelly, Lady A and Rascal Flatts. Locals were also commenting on how odd it felt to not see the parade in person.
Feels weird not having no Rose Parade this year. I always enjoy waking up New Years Day, watching the parade and then heading down to Pasadena to view them up close. It’s for the best though. There’s always 2022

Well there's nothing like watching the Rose Parade's 2021 package with virtual marching bands and pre-recorded segments to make 2021 feel just like 2020. 😂 Are we sure midnight happened? #HappyNewYear2021
