JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Starting Monday, anyone in Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties who has an overdue traffic ticket or criminal fee can save some money if they pay it off this week.
As part of Operation Green Light, you could save 30% if your past due ticket or criminal fee has been sent to a collection agency.
Brian Corrigan, director of communications for the Duval County Clerk of Courts, explained how Operation Green Light works, using an overdue speeding ticket as an example.
“You have 30 days from the date that the citation was issued to pay off that citation. If you don’t pay it off in the 30 days, at that 30-day mark, a late fee is imposed. For example, if you got a speeding ticket, it would be $23. If you don’t pay that by 90 days after the citation was issued, then the citation gets sent to a collection agency and a 30% surcharge gets tacked onto that by the collection agency under Florida law,” Corrigan said Monday on “The Morning Show.”
So let’s say the ticket fine you received is $100 and the late fee is $23. That’s $123. Then it goes to collection, and now you owe an extra $36. The clerk of court’s office is now waiving that $36.
“Over the last two years of the program, so in 2019 and 2020, we had over 1,300 cases paid off, bringing in a $351,000 in revenue,” Corrigan said. “And the stat that I think is most important is 653 drivers either had their driver’s license reinstated as part of this program or made eligible to be reinstated, so it’s a great opportunity.”
Operation Green Light applies to more than just overdue traffic fines. It also includes any past due misdemeanor charges or criminal fees. You have to pay in full -- the fee and the late charge -- by the close of business at 5 p.m. Friday.
