A light winter storm blanketed much of Massachusetts with more than an inch of snow late Sunday through early Monday, causing concerns about icy driving conditions.
Snow started to fall across the state Sunday afternoon, and by around 11:40 p.m., the storm had dumped as much as 2 inches on Longmeadow, according to the National Weather Service’s snowfall totals.
Elsewhere in southern New England, heavier precipitation amounts were reported. In Burlington, Connecticut, 3.5 inches of snow was recorded as of around 5:20 a.m. Monday, the weather service’s data shows.
Precipitation should dissipate in Massachusetts from northwest to southwest through the morning, with little to no snowfall expected by 7 a.m., according to meteorologists.
By the storm’s end, forecaster are expecting less than an inch of snow to have fallen in Boston, 2 to 3 inches in Worcester and 1 to 2 inches in Springfield. Minimal to no accumulations are forecast on the Cape and Islands.
Although snowfall totals are expected to be light across Massachusetts and the rest of the region, forecasters are warning of hazardous driving conditions.
The combination of light precipitation and below-freezing overnight temperatures across Rhode Island and Northeastern Massachusetts, including along the Boston-to-Providence corridor, may result in areas of black ice, according to officials.
Icy, untreated roads may impact the Monday morning commute throughout the commonwealth, forecasters noted.
“As temperatures rise above freezing later this morning and snow tapers off, expect improving conditions,” the weather service said.
Here are the snowfall totals as reported by the weather service. The following are unofficial observations taken during the past 23 hours for the light storm that has been affecting the region. Amounts will be updated as the precipitation comes to end Monday morning.
