CLEVELAND, Ohio-- After learning that obesity was a risk factor for COVID, Donna Bernazzoli, her husband, and two daughters decided to take action by embracing a healthier lifestyle and joining Weight Watchers, losing nearly 150 pounds together.
Bernazzoli, 70, says she and her husband were already at high risk for COVID due to their age.
“It was scary to everyone. No one wants to get sick,” Bernazzoli said. “Obesity was another question that we always struggled with.”
Near the one-year anniversary of the coronavirus pandemic, cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer interviewed Northeast Ohio residents about their experiences, and what they’ll take away from these strange 12 months. Find all the stories from Glimmers of light in a pandemic year here.
This isn’t the first time Bernazzoli and her family have tried to get healthy. Like many of us, she and her daughters have struggled with weight over the years.
“We have joined Weight Watchers in previous years, and it worked, we got to our goal, and then the weight would creep back on,” Bernazzoli said.
Bernazzoli said her oldest daughter, Sarah, 41, sparked the change by joining Weight Watchers in May, ultimately inspiring the whole family to participate by June. They have found the Weight Watchers digital platform pretty helpful while the group meetings went online.
“You just track what you eat, according to their guidelines,” Bernazzoli said. “It’s super easy!”
She notes the platform has helped her know what “good” foods to buy while grocery shopping and focus on better meal planning.
“I’ve experimented with a lot more recipes than in the past. We used to out a lot more. Now we eat more at home,” Bernazzoli said.
Bernazzoli says, pandemic or not, the change was necessary, and now she in her family are in better shape than ever. This summer, Bernazzoli says she and her family look forward to having some fun in the sun and enjoying their hard work.
“My daughters have saved their money, and they’re going to put a pool in their backyard, so we’re all gonna be ready for our swimsuits and the pool,” Bernazzoli said.
