There’s a Giant Light Fixture That Could Be Used to Help Fight COVID-19 - Architectural Digest

Perhaps the best approach when addressing both the “new” and the “normal” aspects of the near future is through design solutions that can unobtrusively mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. One particularly interesting example is Urban Sun, a massive light fixture that is touting its ability to “safely clean up to 99.9% of the coronavirus” once deployed in public spaces, according to Dutch design firm Studio Roosegaarde.

Developed in collaboration with designers, scientists, and other experts, Urban Sun attempts to shine a light on the coronavirus in public spaces, potentially functioning as a virus-fighting safeguard. Specifically, Urban Sun emits far-UVC light. Slightly different from the sun’s UVA and UVB rays, Studio Roosegaarde cites preliminary research from Columbia University and the American Journal of Infection Control that suggests the 222-nanometer wavelength of UVC light is not only safe for humans, but capable of serving as an effective disinfectant.

In terms of Urban Sun’s more visible attributes, the light combines far-UVC and visible light, which fans downward from Urban Sun’s suspension point somewhere between 35 and 115 feet off the ground, depending on location. That creates a “disinfectant” cone measuring up to 125 feet in diameter. There haven’t been any permanent installations of Urban Sun just yet, but the hope is to offer site-specific solutions that account for weather, how people move through a space, and other factors.

While the FDA cautions that there is not yet enough long-term data about the safety of 222-nanometer UVC light, Urban Sun has already secured the support of local authorities and institutions within the Netherlands. A video announcing the project mentions “the support of the Dutch Council of Public Health & Society,” while noting that the invention is “measured and calibrated by the Dutch National Meteorology Institute VSL.”

Though the Urban Sun project’s origins predate the current pandemic, this fusion of design and science gives us a glimpse of what a post-COVID world might look like.
