A magnitude 3.2 earthquake near Truckee, Nevada County, California, USA, was reported only 7 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5.3 miles beneath the epicenter in the evening on Thursday 6 May 2021 at 9:26 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.1 earthquake.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Sierraville (pop. 200) located 9 miles from the epicenter, Truckee (pop. 16,300) 11 miles away, and Kings Beach (pop. 3,800) 22 miles away. In Incline Village (pop. 8,800, 23 miles away), Cold Springs (pop. 8,500, 24 miles away), Reno (pop. 241,400, 27 miles away), Sun Valley (pop. 19,300, 30 miles away), Sparks (pop. 96,100, 30 miles away), and South Lake Tahoe (pop. 21,700, 40 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
