NEWTOWN, Fla. - A 26-year-old Sarasota man was killed Friday night after another driver ran a red traffic light on, troopers said.
It happened shortly before 10:45 p.m. at U.S. Highway 301 and Myrtle Street, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers say a 37-year-old man from Venice was heading north on U.S. 301 as the 26-year-old man was traveling west on Myrtle Street, approaching the intersection.
According to FHP, the driver from Venice a red light at the intersection and crashed into the car driven by the 26-year-old man.
Due to the impact, the car driven by the Sarasota man was sent into the southbound lanes of U.S. 301, and collided with a bus shelter. Troopers said the vehicle ended up in a ditch.
Troopers said they are continuing to investigate the crash and charges are pending. They did not publicly identify either driver.
