A motorist was arrested after a high-speed chase and then three-hour stand off along Interstate 94 in western Wisconsin Sunday evening.

Traffic along the busy interstate was delayed and diverted during the standoff near milepost 47 in Dunn County. The driver, whose identity and age were not given, was eventually taken into custody and booked in to the St. Croix County jail where he is being held on suspicion of felony fleeing, endangering safety and operating a vehicle while intoxicated, as well as a hold on a felony warrant out of Minnesota.

At about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, several motorists called 911 operators in St. Croix County to report a vehicle driving poorly eastbound on I-94 near milepost 10 — which is 10 miles east of the Minnesota border. The vehicle was swerving and had driven in and out of the median, according to the St. Croix County sheriff’s office.

A Woodville, Wis., police officer spotted the vehicle near milepost 24 and attempted to stop it. The motorist instead drove faster. The vehicle was “all over both lanes” and the center line and almost hit another vehicle. Speeds reached 100 miles an hour, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Wisconsin State Patrol set up Stop Sticks at milepost 45 to flatten the vehicle’s tires. The vehicle came to a stop nearly 2 miles later, but the driver refused to get out of the vehicle.

After chemical irritants were used, the Eau Claire Regional SWAT team got the driver out of the car at about 9 p.m. Sunday. There were no injuries reported.
