Janet Mock’s Met Gala 2021 Look by Valentino Was Inspired by Light Reflecting Off Water - Vanity Fair

The writer, director, and producer—who is nominated for an Emmy for her work on Pose—also drew inspiration from the African-American beauties of old Hollywood.

The story of Janet Mock and the ethereal Valentino dress she wore to the Met Gala on Monday night actually starts a few years ago. In one of her first meetings with her stylist, Jason Bolden, he said he thought she was definitely a “Valentino girl.” In a recent interview, Mock said she didn’t know what he meant at the time but now, three ad campaigns and a few show-stopping red carpet looks later, she is all about it.

“Now I have this great affinity for it all,” she said on Monday morning, after leaving an appointment with her esthetician. “Valentino has just always been about this amazing fit and pairing.” It’s also based on her love for Pierpaolo Piccioli, the artist and designer whose unique eye has brought joy and whimsy to the brand’s couture shows. “It’s Pierpaolo and the way he sees the world—his outlook beyond just being an amazing artist and a great leader. He actually brings his craftspeople and the atelier out front and center to say, I don’t make this alone, it takes a whole army of people to make these creations that move people to cry out into the world.”

They picked Monday’s gown, a slinky light blue concoction, after they video chatted through the brand’s Venice couture show in July. Mock said she first noticed how “dreamy” the dress was. “It’s that perfect color of blue, like the blue that shines off of, water reflecting the moonlight,” she said. “I was talking to Pierpaolo at my final fitting yesterday and he said, that's exactly what the inspiration was. It was from an artist he collaborated with who remembered a proverb about the shining of the moonlight.”

Bolden said that the simple process was characteristic of their working relationship. “It becomes very easy when you know someone so well, and you listen to them and you see them,” he said of their process. “It's very easy for you to know how to deliver something that they're going to resonate with.”

They decided to interpret the night’s theme, American fashion, somewhat loosely, focusing on the classical shapes and inspiration of old Hollywood. Mock said that she has always drawn inspiration from Lena Horne and Dorothy Dandridge, actors who blazed a trail for Black women in the industry. “I’m always looking to them as great inspiration, you know, because they were trailblazers long before I even got here,” she said. “As always, the adage is, stand on the shoulders of giants. I’m just so grateful.”

To make the look a bit more modern, Mock’s hairstylist Chuck Amos found inspiration in a few very different eras of American beauty. “She said she wanted a curled under look, and I told her it's very 1997,” Amos said in a recent phone call. “It’s a nice throwback to where we are today in fashion. We thought it would be great if she had it down because she has spaghetti straps.” They thought a sleek look with a middle part would contrast with the wide silhouette and cloud-like texture of the dress.

To achieve the look, he first used Pantene Gold Series hydrating oil and heat protecting spray, before adding in a suite of clip-in extensions. “I’m going flat, flat, flat. I’m going to make sure that it’s all flat, so I’m using a hot straightening comb,” he said. “I’m using Bumble and Bumble Thickening Creme Contour for that. I love straightening Black girl’s roots with that because it’s not too heavy.”

For Mock’s makeup artist Wendi Miyake, the goal for the night was to accentuate Mock’s luminous skin and pick up the color from the dress with a bit of blue eyeshadow. “I use the Valentino foundation in the shade [Deep Neutral 2]. I also use the highlighter by Valentino—it’s called V-Lighter, and the color is called Ambra,” she said. “I actually use that as a primer underneath the foundation. Then, once I put the foundation on, I come back and hit the high points of the face.” To get what Miyake calls “the bushy eyebrow effect,” she uses Valentino’s Brow Trio, and gets an added bit of drama with a high impact swipe of the brand’s eyeliner in the color Nero.

It’s become customary to describe the team of professionals who help get a celebrity ready for a red carpet as a “glam squad,” but when it comes to Mock and her team, they’re something more like a glam family. “The great thing about it is that I get to build a community, and they're my people. They’re always there to make me look and feel my absolute best. And so I'm just so lucky to have Chuckie, Wendi, and Jason,” she said. “I always feel like I’m the Cinderella of it all. All these magicians come in and they work their high-end magic, and all of the fairy dust is sprinkled on me from all the fairies. And I’ve been given all of the confidence in the world.”
