ST. CLAIR, MI — A Michigan woman allegedly kidnapped by her estranged ex has been found alive in Ohio, following a nearly 12-hour standoff between her abductor and police.
About 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 1, 55-year-old Carol D. Durand was kidnapped from a residence in the 5200 block of Pointe Drive in East China Township, according to the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies issued an advisory describing Durand’s 52-year-old ex as the suspect, stating he had assaulted a 47-year-old man in the residence’s driveway and also injured Durand before fleeing with her in a black 2007 Honda Accord.
At 9:34 a.m. Wednesday, police in Findlay, Ohio, responded to a room at Drury Inn & Suites where the suspect and Durand were, said St. Clair County Sheriff Mat King. The hotel is about 155 miles from where Durand was allegedly abducted.
Findlay police made contact with the suspect, who engaged them in a lengthy standoff, King said. The suspect was armed with a 9mm pistol and held Durand in the room against her will, the sheriff said.
About 9 p.m., the suspect allowed Durand to leave the room. An hour or so later, the suspect stepped out, surrendered, and was arrested, King said.
No gunshots were fired during the ordeal.
The suspect was lodged at the Hancock County Justice Center, where he remains as of 9 a.m. Thursday. St. Clair County authorities have issued a felony warrant for him, charging him with unlawful imprisonment, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, and aggravated domestic violence, King said.
Durand was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Family members were to travel to Ohio to bring her back to Michigan, King said.
St. Clair County Sheriff’s deputies traveled to Findlay Wednesday evening to aid in the investigation and conduct interviews, King said. They are working with prosecutors and Findlay police officers to extradite the suspect back to Michigan, he added.
The man who was allegedly assaulted by the suspect at East China Township house was also hospitalized early Wednesday morning, King said. He could not elaborate on the specifics of either his or Durand’s injuries, apart from saying they were not gunshot wounds.
The sheriff went on to say there is some confusion on if Durand the suspect had been married or not, though they were in some type of romantic relationship.
