BERN TWP., Pa. - A group of golfers isn't letting triple-digit temperatures, a global pandemic or a 6 p.m. tee time stop them from hitting the green at the Berkshire Country Club in Bern Township, Berks County.
"It's just incredible, the bonds that you make, the people that you meet, and the friendships that last a lifetime. That's why I do it," said Blake Scheider, while trying to hold back tears.
The crew of golfers was wearing matching orange shirts, and Blake, also sporting the tattoo. It's personal. Blake's mom battled multiple sclerosis for 50 years before she died in 2016. This golf tournament, benefiting the MS Society, is in her honor.
"Mom was a fighter," he said.
But 6 p.m. sounds like a really late tee time, and it is. But these guys are out all night.
"24-hour golf marathon. We play from Sunday at 6:00 p.m. until Monday at 6:00 p.m.," said Scheider.
They golf straight through the night, which adds an interesting element to the game.
"Most of us know the lay of the land here. We know the good places to drive and the bad places to drive so we're pretty safe about it and again, safety is our number one priority," said Scheider.
Not only does nightfall cool them off, it makes them glow. They'll switch to balls with LED lights and glow sticks to help them see.
While they say this longest day of golf is nothing compared to what some are calling the longest year ever, thanks to COVID, they just hope to raise some money and have fun while doing it.
"We're just moving forward, having a good time and, hopefully, we'll be here in 24 hours," said Scheider.
