CANAAN — State police charged a Dutchess County man with attempted arson after police said he tried to light a state vehicle on fire at the Canaan toll plaza in Columbia County.

Police said at 4 p.m. July 22, a terminated Thruway employee tried to light a Thruway vehicle on fire. Police said the suspect fled the scene, but was ultimately taken into custody on the Taconic State Parkway without incident.

Bradley R. Straley of Washington, Dutchess County was charged with second-degree attempted arson, a felony. Police did not provide further details about why Straley was terminated from his job, or if it had just recently happened.

Straley was arraigned virtually before City of Hudson court and sent to the Columbia County Jail on $5,000 cash bail or $15,000 bond.
