In the light: Organizations celebrate Oklahoma Contemporary opening with 'Bright Golden Haze: Reflections' - Oklahoman.com

Rather than the tiny pinpricks of brightness from lightning bugs, the prominent gleams emanate from 25 lifelike, oversized “Fireflies” sculptures dotting the landscape in the Meinders Garden. “I don’t know if I’ve ever met a single person that didn’t love fireflies, so it was an easy project to begin to consider. The moment that Maureen (Heffernan, the CEO and president of the Myriad Gardens Foundation) mentioned it, I thought, ‘That’s something that I could spend months analyzing and trying to figure out the best way to represent it.’ I hope when people see the exhibit they will stop and think of the beauty of creation,” said Oklahoma City artist Nathan Pratt, who created the Myriad Gardens’ “Fireflies” installation. “These little fireflies look simple, but they are precision engineered sculptures.”

They also are part of a series of a dozen art installations, exhibitions and performances planned throughout Oklahoma City to celebrate the opening of this year of Oklahoma Contemporary Art Center’s new $30 million home just north of Automobile Alley. Since each one has been created in response to “Bright Golden Haze,” Oklahoma Contemporary’s inaugural exhibition, the projects in the “Bright Golden Haze: Reflections” program all incorporate light.

“The beauty of these sculptures is that the components are fixed, but the light is actually what we will be sculpting throughout the summer,” Pratt said.

“We’ve only just begun. I think it’s a small miracle that we were able to pull this off ... with COVID. This affected us greatly over the last three months, trying to get the lighting system delivered and manufactured with the multiple companies that were involved in the fabrication and the whole supply chain that was affected.”

Pandemic delays

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Oklahoma Contemporary was forced to postpone the March grand opening festivities for its new campus.

The nonprofit multidisciplinary arts center will begin offering limited access to “Bright Golden Haze” to members only Thursday-Aug. 23 using a small-capacity, timed ticketing system.

The public opening date has not yet been announced.
