Italian Paralympic gold medalist Alex Zanardi underwent a five-hour surgery on Monday in order to reconstruct his face following a  handbike crash last month, according to the Associated Press. It marked the third major surgery that Zanardi has had since the crash. Zanardi collided with an oncoming truck during a relay event in the Tuscan village of Pienza on June 19.

Following the five-hour procedure, the former auto racing star was taken to the hospital's intensive care unit where he is currently in a medically induced coma. Zanardi suffered multiple facial and cranial injuries, and doctors believe that there's a possibility he has brain damage as a result of the accident.

"His condition remains stable in terms of his cardio-respiratory status and grave in terms of his neurological status," the hospital said.

Dr. Paolo Gennaro of Santa Maria alle Scotte Hospital in Siena performed the operation and revealed that it required 3D technology in order to "measure" Zanardi, the AP reported.

Zanardi was a successful auto racer before losing both of his legs in a racing accident almost 20 years ago. Since then, the 53-year old has been a star in the Paralympics with four gold medals and two silver medals in cycling.
