STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Soon New York City drivers will be helping the city recoup lost coronavirus revenue at the parking meters.

On Thursday, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released a “citywide savings program” document that shows that the Department of Transportation (DOT) will “increase second hour parking rates above 96th Street in Manhattan and in the outer boroughs.”

The city has yet to disclose how much the hourly parking rates will increase. Currently, the hourly parking rate above 96th Street in Manhattan and in the outer boroughs ranges from $1.25 to $2.50, depending on the location.

While it’s unclear how much the parking rates will increase, the document shows that the city will net nearly $32 million from the changes through Fiscal Year 2024.

The city last raised parking meter prices in December 2018, when the vast majority of Staten Island’s parking meter rates increased from $1 an hour to $1.25 an hour.

However, the St. George area was zoned separately from the rest of the borough. As a result, it saw an even larger jump in price to $1.50 an hour.

A map provided by the DOT shows the parking rates throughout New York City.

City Hall did not respond to a request for comment regarding the decision to increase second-hour parking meter prices.
