STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The daily commute for Staten Island Ferry riders is about to look a lot more familiar.
Starting Monday, July 6, the Staten Island Ferry will return to full, pre-coronavirus (COVID-19) levels of rush hour service -- with boats running every 15 or 20 minutes during the busiest commuting times, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Thursday.
“More and more Staten Islanders are coming back to work, so we’re seeing ridership up to almost 17,000 people daily this week. That’s a major step up,” de Blasio said. “We’ve got to keep the ferry safe and we’ve got to allow for social distancing -- so we’re bringing back more rush hour service.”
The Staten Island Ferry will run 15-minute service on weekdays, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., and from 5 p.m. to. 7 p.m.
The Staten Island Ferry will run 20-minute service on weekdays, from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m., and from 3:50 p.m. to 4:50 p.m.

While ridership has been creeping back up in recent weeks, the nearly 17,000 daily riders last week still represents an over 75% drop in ridership from the usual 70,000 daily riders pre-pandemic.
Starting in late March, the Staten Island Ferry began running on a reduced service schedule due to the coronavirus outbreak, providing hourly trips to essential workers. When hourly service was implemented, Staten Island Ferry ridership was down more than 90%.
In late May, the city began to slowly restore service, increasing rush hour frequencies to every 30 minutes as opposed to hourly.
In early June, as New York City began Phase One of reopening amid the coronavirus, the city added more service as hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers were expected to return to work, increasing rush hour frequencies to every 20 minutes.
Following Friday’s announcement, the Staten Island Ferry will be back to full rush hour service starting Monday, though additional work remains to restore full service around the clock, particularly during the overnight hours.
